What is Nehemiah chapter 6 all about? ›

This chapter records the continuing opposition to Nehemiah from sources both external (Sanballat, Tobiah, and their allies) and internal (the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets). The map of Jerusalem in Nehemiah's time.

Nehemiah and his followers do what seems to be the impossible because they are doing what God has called them to do. You don't have to rebuild a wall to do the will of God. Sometimes, simply waking up each day and making the most of your time with others and with God is what you're being called to do.

What's the big idea? Nehemiah recorded the reconstruction of the wall of Jerusalem, Judah's capital city. Together, he and Ezra, who led the spiritual revival of the people, directed the political and religious restoration of the Jews in their homeland after the Babylonian captivity.

Nehemiah takes the problem to God, and asks Him to handle things by strengthening his hands for the task he was called to do. He's not asking for strength to annihilate his enemies, but strength to simply do what God has called him to do. This means humility.

The walls were a protection, but they were also an important physical symbol of the establishment of the Jews as a people. The holy city became a unifying force as families were chosen by lot to come live in it (see Nehemiah 11:1–2).

God's leader is not discouraged by adversity.

Nehemiah listened but persisted. Nehemiah knew he was “doing a great work” (6:3) and could not come down from the wall to debate with the enemies. Nehemiah persisted even when adversity came. God's people cannot give up when adversity comes.

One of the biggest and best takeaways from the story of Nehemiah is the teamwork. Nehemiah did not do the work. Lots and lots of united people did the work. Chapter 3 uses the phrase “next to him” or “next to them” about 20 times to show that shoulder-to-shoulder and side-by-side they all worked together.

Other leadership techniques Nehemiah used were adaptability, foresight, leveraging power, and a plethora of perseverance. Using those strategies, Nehemiah was able to witness the completion of his vision. the walls were restored in a mere fifty-two days. Nehemiah offers a leadership lesson for all.

God allowed Nehemiah to travel back with the king's blessing to rebuild the walls and temple of Jerusalem. Things became tricky when their enemies wanted to stop them. But God continued to bless the work of their hands and they were able to complete their building projects.

Unlike Ezra, who was a priest, Nehemiah was a lay-person. He could have been born and raised in Persia. In Nehemiah 1:11, Nehemiah tells us that he was a cupbearer to king Artaxerxes. He protected the king's life with his own life, tasting the king's wine for poison.

Nehemiah (Neh. 1:11) is described as oinochoos in the Septuagint and as pincerna in the Vulgate, meaning cup-bearer or butler (literally, “pourer”). His inclusion in a list of possible references to eunuchs may derive from misinterpretation of the word oinochoos (Sheriffs 1990:356).
