Smithing allows you to make various metal items from Ores and Bars.Bars can be smelted atFurnaces, and the Items can be Crafted atAnvils. It is the complementary skill of Mining, and picking up both of these Skills will allow you to level them up very cheaply (but it will take more time than grinding both of them separately, using the fastest methods). At high Skill levels, Smithing can be used as a solid moneymaking Skill, thanks to the high demand for high-level Metal Bars. Smelting Runite Ore is one of the most profitable activities in the entire Game. It requires 85 Smithing, and can potentially net you up to 1kk Gold/Hour.

Leveling up Mining quickly can be very expensive, and it requires high initial investment (you have to buy Ores and/or Barson the Grand Exchange), but you can get some of your money back if you sell smelted Bars and/or created Items. This means that many Players might opt for slower, but also cheaper, and/or much more profitable leveling methods. This Guide will go over the fastest, the most efficient, the easiest, and the most profitable, alternative methods of leveling up Smithing from 1 to 99. It will also cover the prerequisites, Smithing-related Quests, and some optional Gear and Items that can make skilling process smoother.

Before You Start

There are some preparations to be made before you begin to level up Smithing Skill. Some of these preparation steps are mandatory, while others are optional but recommended. These steps take a form of Quests and Items that improve your Skilling efficiency and generally make your Leveling process much more bearable. There are also a few things you should remember when Leveling Smithing, we will cover these as well.

Quests are a great way of getting the first few Smithing Levels under your belt. Completing them is generally much faster (and quite cheaper) than Grinding through early Smithing Levels traditionally. Quests with higher requirements (and the longer ones)can be used for getting some additional Smithing Experience or as a small leap away from the boring, repeatablegrind. They mightbe slower, but they are also certainly more engaging than using an anvil or a furnace nonstop for a few hours.

  • Recipe for Disaster; FreeingPirate Pete subquest(Recommended, Skill Requirements: 42 Crafting, 31 Cooking. Rewards: 1000 Smithing Experience, 1000 Fishing Experience, 1000 Crafting Experience, 1000 Cooking Experience). This is a part of the 10 part "Recipe for Disaster" Quest Chain. The above-mentioned part is worth doing, especially if you plan on completing the whole chain.
  • Heroes' Quest (Recommended, Skill Requirements: 53 Fishing, 53 Cooking, 50 Mining, 25 Herblore. Reward: 2257 Smithing Experience, Attack, Defense, Strenght, Hitpoints, Ranged, Fishing, Cooking, Woodcutting, Firemaking, Mining, Herblore Experience, access to the Heroes' Guild). This is a rather long quest with somewhat low Experience rewards, but it also grants you access to the Heroes' Guild, so it is definitely worth doing at some point.
  • The Giant Dwarf (Recommended, Skill Requirements: 14 Thieving, 16 Firemaking, 33 Magic, 12 Crafting, and optionally 20 Smithing, 20 Mining. 2500 Mining, Crafting, and Smithing Experience, 1500 Firemaking, Thieving, and Magic Experience). This might be worth doing if you are leveling up Smithing and Mining simultaneously.
  • Between a Rock...(Optional, Skill Requirements: 40 Mining, 50 Smithing, 30 Defense. Reward: 5000 Mining, Smithing, and Defense Experience, a Rune Pickaxe). This is more of a Mining Quest, but it is worth doing if you meet requirements and plan on leveling up Mining as well. It also awards you withsecond best Pickaxe in the game (Rune Pickaxe requires 41 Mining to use), which is a nice bonus.
  • Elemental Workshop I (Recommended, Skill Requirements: 20 Crafting, 20 Smithing, 20 Mining. Reward: 5000 Smithing Experience, 5000 Crafting Experience, access to the Elemental Workshop, ability to make Elemental Shields). Short Quest with good rewards and low requirements. It is worth completing, especially if you want to do part II as well.
  • Devious Minds(Optional, Skill Requirements: 65 Smithing, 55 Runecrafting, 50 Fletching. Reward: 6500 Smithing Experience, 5000 Runecrafting Experience, 5000 Fletching Experience). Short Quest with good Experience rewards and medium skill requirements, definitely worth doing if you need a short leap away from the grind.
  • Cabin Fever (Optional, Skill Requirements: 50 Smithing, 45 Crafting, 42 Agility, 40 Ranged. Reward: 7000 Smithing Experience, 7000 Crafting Experience, 7000 Agility Experience, access to the Mos Le'Harmless, 50% discount on the Charter Ship prices). Medium-length Quest, worth doing is want to taste the everyday life of a Pirate.
  • Elemental Workshop II(Recommended, Skill Requirements: 30 Smithing, 20 Magic. Reward: 7000 Smithing Experience, 7500 Crafting Experience, ability to create Elemental Mind Equipment, ability to use Elemental Mind Equipment). Medium length Quest with rather good Experience rewards. Completing both parts of the Elemental Workshop Chain will award you with 12500 Smithing Experience, which is nothing to sneeze at.
  • The Knight's Sword(Recommended, Skill Requirements: 15 Mining, 15 Smithing, 10 Cooking. Reward: 12725 Smithing Experience, an ability so smelt Blurite Ore into Blurite Bars, a Blurite Sword). This Quest alone is enough to get you from Level 1 Smithing to Level 29 Smithing, and you should strongly consider completing it, as it is more time efficient than standard Level Grinding (requirements for this Quest are very low, so you should consider completing it even if you don't meet some of them and will have to do some additional grind).
  • Dragon Slayer II(Optional, Skill Requirements: 68 Mining, 75 Magic, 62 Crafting, 70 Smithing, 60 Agility, 50 Construction, 50 Hitpoints, 60 Thieving. Reward: 18000 Mining Experience, 25000 Smithing Experience, 15000 Agility Experience, 15000 Thieving Experience, access to the Myths' Guild, various other rewards). Very long and very difficult Quest suited for only the most experienced and dedicatedPlayers, but it awards a lot of Smithing experience, so we are mentioning it here just in case.
Items and Equipment

If there are any OSRS Skilling rules, this is certainly one of them: If there is an item or a piece of equipment that can make your grind easier, you should use it. Below, we present you a list of items that will make your Smithing grind a little easier.

  • Hammer, Bars, Ores - Smith's Bread and Butter. These are an absolute necessity (as you have guessed). Hammer is required for Crafting items out of Bars, Bars are needed for Crafting Items, and Ores are needed for Smelting Bars. The main portion of your expenses while leveling up Smithing will come from buying all the required materials. Trivial, but still worth mentioning.
  • Stamina Potions - Energy drinks. These are not really required, but they are very useful when traveling is involved. If you plan on Skilling with the Blast Furnace, Stamina Potions may prove to be handier than you think (considering their extremely cheap price, you should always have some of them with you).
  • Goldsmith Gauntlets- Shiny, shiny experience. These Gauntlets increase your Experience gained from smelting Gold Ore into a Gold Bar by about 2,5 times (from 22,5 to 56,2 Experience/Per Bar). They are a reward from the Family Crest Quest and can be obtained by giving Magical Steel Gauntlets and 25000 Gold Pieces to NPC Avan, located at the Kharid Mine. These are flat out required if you want to earn Experience efficiently when Smelting Gold Bars at the Blast Furnace.
  • Ice Gloves- Probably made out of asbestos. These allow you to collect Bars at the Blast Furnace without the need to use a Bucket of Water, which frees up inventory space. Using them in a combination with the Goldsmith Gauntlets will allow you to maximize your Skilling efficiency at the Blast Furnace (you will have to swap between them because you can't wear two pairs of Gloves at the same time). They can be obtained from the Ice Queen, that can be found in the White Wolf Mountain.
  • Coal Bag - double the Coal, double the Fun (efficiency). This Bag allows you to carry 27 pieces of Coal inside of it, effectively doubling the amount of Coal that you can carry, greatly increasing your Smelting efficiency. It can be bought from the Prospector Percy's Nugget Shop for 100 Golden Nuggets. Grinding the Nuggets might take some time, but it is worth it, especially if you plan on smelting Ores for profit in the future.
  • GracefulOutfit - Be Light as a Feather. This set of Weight-Reducing Gear will allow you to run for longer, by reducing your Weight and providing you with a 30% boost to Run Energy Regeneration. The whole set provides a weight reduction of 25 kilograms. It can be bought in Parts from NPC Grace. Acquiring it will require ~55 Agility (needed to collect Marks of Grace from Rooftop Agility Courses). The wholeSet costs 260 Marks, and you should start by buying Cape, Boots, Gloves, and Legs, as those parts provide you with the best Cost/Weight-Reduction ratio. Getting this can be quite of a hassle on its own, but it is worth it. This set is recommended for the Blast Furnace methods.
Things to Remember
  • The Furnace closest to a Bank is located in Edgeville (alternatively, you could use Furnaces located at Falador or Port Phasmatys).
  • The Anvil closest to a Bank is located in Varrock (it is also quite close to the Grand Exchange).

The Training

For the most part, leveling up Smithing is straightforward and can be done in just a fewmajor steps.Of course, there aresome alternative, more profitable, but also slower methods -we will cover those as well.

OSRS Smithing Guide: 1-99 Training - Old School Runescape - Odealo (4)
Skill Levels 1-37 ⇒ The Smithing Quest Run
  • This is done by completing all above-mentioned Recommended Quests (Recipe for Disaster, Heroes' Quest, The Giant Dwarf, Elemental Workshop I, Elemental Workshop II, and The Knight's Sword).
  • You will gain a total of 30982 Smithing Experience which is enough to advance from Level 1 Smithing to Level 37 Smithing.
  • This is the recommended way of getting the first 36Smithing levels, as it is a lot less time-consuming than the standard Experience Grind.

Note:The Knight's Sword Quest alone is enough to carry you straight to the Level 29 Smithing, and you should complete it even if you do not plan on doing any other Smithing-related quests.

OSRS Smithing Guide: 1-99 Training - Old School Runescape - Odealo (5)
An alternative approach for Levels 1-30 ⇒ Smithing Bronze Items
  • Bronze Bars are created by using a Tin Ore in a combination with a Copper Ore on a Furnace.
  • If you opt for this method, you should be Smithing the highest-level Bronze Items you are able to create (Axe at Level 1, Unfinished Bolts at Level 3, Dart Tips at Level 4, Spears at Level 5, Javelin Heads at Level 6, Throwing Knives at Level 7, and so on).

Note: The above-mentioned Bronze Items are currently the most profitable to make at the respectable Skill-levels, but profits from creating them are marginal.

OSRS Smithing Guide: 1-99 Training - Old School Runescape - Odealo (6)
An alternative approach for Levels 30-(85)99 ⇒ Smelting Steel Bars at the Blast Furnace + Smelting Cannonballs (from Level 35 Smithing)
  • Thanks to the halved Coal consumption at the Blast Furnace, Smelting Steel Bars there results in a ~140 Gold profit per Bar (instead of a 10 Gold loss per Bar).
  • When using Coal Bag and Ice Gloves you can make up to 4000 Steel Bars per Hour, which amounts for a ~540000 Gold profit per Hour (after subtracting all the costs).
  • This is a slow, but alsovery profitable alternative method.

Note: From Level 35 Smithing you can turn created Steel Bars into Cannonballs for even more profit. This is not experience-effective, however.

  • Completing the Dwarf Cannon Quest is required for smelting Cannonballs.
  • 4 Cannonballs can be created out of 1 Steel Bar, for a ~260 Gold Profit per each Smelt, and a total of ~140000 Gold per Hour over just selling Steel Bars.

An alternative approach for Levels 34-99 ⇒ Smithing Dart Tips
  • Darts are used for Power-leveling the Fletching Skill, so there is always a demand for them on the Grand Exchange.
  • Smithing Darts is a slower, but less costly (or even slightly profitable) alternative for power-leveling Smithing by Smelting Gold Bars at the Blast Furnace.
  • Start at Level 34 Smithing by Smithing Steel Dart Tips (~3900 Steel Bars are required for this step).
  • At Level 54 Smithing, switch to Smithing Mithril Dart Tips (~257700 Mithril Bars are required for this step).
  • At Level 74 Smithing, switch to Smithing Adamant Dart Tips(~191000 Adamantite Bars are required to achieve Level 99 Smithing).
OSRS Smithing Guide: 1-99 Training - Old School Runescape - Odealo (14)
Skill Levels 30(37)-40 ⇒ Smithing Iron Items
  • Iron Bars are created by using an Iron Ore on a Furnace.
  • Level 15 Smithing is required for Smelting Iron Bars from Iron Ores (Smelting 1 Iron Bar awards 12,5 Smithing Experience).
  • If you opt for this method, you should be Smithing the highest-level Iron Items you are able to create (Two-Handed Sword at Level 30, Plate Legs at Level 31, and Plate Body from Level 33 forward).
OSRS Smithing Guide: 1-99 Training - Old School Runescape - Odealo (15)
Skill Levels 40-99 ⇒ Smelting Gold Bars at the Blast Furnace
  • This is the fastest method for Skilling Smithing to Level 99, but it is also a costly one.
  • The above-mentioned Goldsmith Gauntlets, Ice Gloves, Coal Bag, Graceful Set, and Stamina Potions are recommended for this method.
  • You can gain up to 380000 Smithing Experience per Hour by Smelting Gold Bars at the Blast Furnace (while you have all efficiency-increasing items equipped - Goldsmith Gauntlets amount for the highest portion of the Experience gains).
  • To advance from Level 40 to Level 99 Smithing, you will need to Smelt 231268 Gold Ores (if wearing Goldsmith Gauntlets).
  • Gold Bars are 290 Gold Pieces cheaper than Gold Ores, which means that you will lose 290 Gold for every Smelted Iron Bar.

Note:You will lose over 72000000 Gold if you choose this method for Skilling from Level 40 to Level 99 Smithing (if you sell all the Gold Bars).

OSRS Smithing Guide: 1-99 Training - Old School Runescape - Odealo (16)
An alternative approach for Levels 85-99 ⇒ Smelting Runite Bars at the Blast Furnace
  • With the proper equipment and some skill, you should be able to Smelt about 1500-1600 Runite Bars per Hour, for a total of ~80000 Smithing Experience per Hour.
  • With this method, you can make up to 650000 Gold per Hour (which makes it a very profitable alternative for gaining those last few Smithing Levels).
  • You will need all the itemsmentioned in the "Before you Start" chapter for the maximum efficiency (except for the Goldsmith Gauntlets, of course).
  • High Agility Skill is recommended for this method.
  • This is a slow, but also very profitablealternative method.
